Area man injured

HINSDALE -- A Hinsdale man was flown to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after he was injured while chopping down a tree.

Jesse Schultz, 26, was taken by helicopter to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., according to Hinsdale Police Chief Wayne T. Gallagher.

Police and fire and rescue officials responded to the call at 7 Hastings Circle Wednesday shortly after 3 p.m.

Schultz was chopping down the tree with an ax, Gallagher said. It looked like the tree broke off at the point where he was chopping and kicked back and struck him in the upper thigh, he said.

Schultz was conscious but his leg was broken and he was suffering from internal bleeding, according to officials.

No further information about Schultz's condition was available this morning.

Theft reported from burned home

BELLOWS FALLS -- Police are investigating the theft of a large quantity of copper tubing from a home that was the site of a three-alarm fire last week.

The theft from 13 Center St. was reported by the property owner on Tuesday morning and appears to have happened overnight Monday, according to Bellows Falls police.

Scrap metal dealers in the area should be on the lookout for copper that has been snipped rather than sawed and appears or smells burned, police said.

The fire that badly damaged the two-story home last Wednesday was started accidentally by the homeowner using a heat gun to strip paint from an exterior wall, according to fire officials.

Injured hiker carried down Monadnock

An injured hiker was rescued from Mount Monadnock Wednesday evening, according to a news release from N.H. Fish and Game officials.

Allie Smith, 24, of Peterborough suffered a knee injury during the descent from the summit and was unable to continue down the mountain, according to the release. A team of conservation officers located Smith and her companion, Brian Kenney of Peterborough, at about 9 p.m. about 1.5 miles up the Dublin Trail, officials said.

Kenney called 911 for assistance at about 5:30 p.m., according to the release.

Members of the Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, Rescue Inc. of Brattleboro, and other volunteers assisted conservation officers carrying the victim down the trail, according to the release.

Rescuers reached the trailhead parking lot by 10:45 p.m., and Smith declined ambulance transport and was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough by Kenney, officials said.

Man faces charge after hotel incident

A Vermont man faces a charge of criminal mischief after an incident at a hotel in Keene Wednesday evening.

Christopher L. Licence, 33, of Westminster, Vt., was arrested after punching through the glass in the window between Waxy O'Connors pub and the lobby of the Best Western Sovereign Hotel on Winchester Street, according to Keene police Lt. Eliezer Rivera.

The incident was reported at about 9:15 p.m.

Damages are estimated at about $500. Police had no information about what caused Licence to put his fist through the glass, Rivera said.

Licence was held in protective custody for the night and then released on $1,000 personal recognizance. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7.
