A 17-year-old male was stabbed and killed in Keene on Sunday night, according to people who identified themselves as friends of the victim.

The state Attorney General's Office, which is handling the case, has not released any information about the incident, but Keene police responded to a disturbance on Dunbar Street in Keene around 10:30 p.m.

Chris B. Hart, 20, of Keene said he had been friends with the victim for more than three years, and heard about the stabbing from a number of mutual friends.

The information circulating among their circle is that the victim, a local resident, was trying to break up a fight between two other friends when he was stabbed.

He frequently tried to stop fights and keep the peace between his friends, Hart said.

"He was always trying to make people laugh. He's just trying to be happy."

An ambulance pulled away from the intersection of Dunbar and Main streets at 10:40 p.m.

A man had been lying on the south side of the street with blood on his clothes, according to a witness who declined to give his name on Sunday night.

Early this morning the N.H. State Police Major Crime Unit and Keene police were both on the scene, and the street was closed with police tape for about a block.
